Physics 210: Maple

Lectures 1 & 2 (Sep 18 & 23)
  • Important: On the lab machines, you should have the following alias defined for xmaple.
    % alias xmaple
    % alias xmaple='xmaple -cw'
    (This is defined in the standard 210 ~/.aliases file).  The -cw option stands for "classic worksheet" and is the mode that I will be discussing in class, and which I will ask you to use in completing the Maple homework.  In order to ensure that you have the -cw option enabled, please always start xmaple from the command line, i.e.
    % xmaple
    and not from the dash / launcher.  Also, when xmaple starts up, you will probably see a message like
    *** glibc detected *** /opt/maple16/bin.IBM_INTEL_LINUX/maplew: free(): invalid pointer: 0x09d137e8 ***
    You can ignore this.

  • When working with xmaple (the GUI version of maple), Save (Ctrl-s) your worksheet frequently to guard against software/hardware crashes. (This comment clearly applies to the use of any editing/composition software.)

  • Worksheet [PDF 18 pages] showing calculations in Chapter 2 of Maple Learning Guide [Version 9 available here: PDF 332 pages]
  • Worksheet [PDF 4 pages] illustrating usage of some particularly useful Maple commands: basic calculus, linear algebra.
