UNIX and General Information

• Guide to Unix Systems (Physics Dept). Maintained by the Physics Computer Group. Contains overview of available systems and covers most of the basics you should need to get going on the machines in RLM 3.118. Currently hasn't been updated for a couple of years, but should still be useful.
• UT Computation Center Unix Resources. An excellent collection of Unix resources and links including an Introduction to Unix for novices.
• Internet Unix & Tutorials from North Carolina AT. Various guides and Unix links. Use with caution as some material is specific to NCAT.
• vi Editor Tutorial. This is the first document returned on Aug 26 1998, by the AltaVista search '+vi +editor +tutorial'; there are literally hundreds of them out there.

Searching the Web

• Netscape Collection. Good luck if you can't find it from here.
• AltaVista. Very comprehensive coverage. Spending a few minutes in help really pays off.
• Magellan. Has reviews/synopses of many large sites; will help you avoid stumbling into pornographic computational physics sites.

Creating HTML documents

• A Beginner's Guide to HTML (from NCSA)
• A More Complete Guide to HTML (from UT Austin). An older (c 1994-1995) NCSA guide which I downloaded so that browsing would be snappier. Still a useful guide/reference for the "basics" of HTML.
• Choose the How to Create Web Services option from Netscape's Help menu
• One of the easiest and most powerful ways of learning HTML is to use the Document Source feature from Netscape's View menu. Find a Web document with a layout or feature you wish to emulate, select Document Source from the View and then examine the source (which will appear in a separate window) to see how things are done.

Maple (Symbolic Manipulation)

• Maple: Maple V Home Page including links to various Maple V Web sites.

Graphing (XY plots)

• Gnuplot
• xmgr
• The SM (Supermongo) User's Manual (PS). Software available on Relativity SGI machines. Powerful, interactive and readily produces publication-quality scientific plots.

• ``Numerical Recipes'': Home Page and Online Books including: [Fortran PS], [Fortran PDF], [C PS], [C PDF]. Complete text of both Fortran and C editions of ``Numerical Recipes'' in both Postscript and PDF formats.
• Netlib Repository: Large collections of mathematical software, papers, and databases. Browse or Search the Netlib libraries.
• LAPACK User's Guide (html)

Scientific Visualization

• Annotated list of Scientific Visualization Sites from NASA.
• IRIS Explorer Center. IRIS Explorer is a powerful scientific visualization system available on the Relativity Center SGI machines, including einstein, and on the Phys. Dept. NT machines. Here are links to Postscript versions of the User's Guide with graphics and without graphics.
